Abstract

The US Department of Health and Human Services’ Children’s Bureau developed this Resource Guide to support service providers in their work with parents, caregivers, and their children to prevent child abuse and neglect and promote child and family well-being. The Resource Guide primarily targets community-based child abuse prevention professionals who work to prevent child maltreatment and promote well-being. However, other professionals, including policymakers, parent educators, family support workers, healthcare providers, program administrators, teachers, child care providers, mentors, and clergy, may also find it useful. It includes information about trauma, human trafficking, family homelessness, and youth-related issues. The guide is also available in Spanish.

Abstract

This report describes an evaluation of an intensive client management program, called Promotor Pathway, that aims to help high-risk and disconnected youth overcome significant life obstacles such as lack of education, homelessness, trauma, substance abuse, and court involvement. The Washington, DC-based Latin American Youth Center launched this program is 2008. At the core of the program is the premise that long-term, positive relationships with caring adults, or promotors, is the most important factor in helping youth reach their goals. The team of Urban Institute evaluators conducted a randomized controlled trial to assess whether the Promotor Pathway program improved the outcomes of youth in educational attainment, employment, reduced births, residential stability, and reduced risk-taking behaviors. They found that youth who had a promotor were more likely than the control group to use services by the end of the 18-month trial period. The youth with promotors were up to 30 percent more likely to receive services for mental health counseling, substance use, public assistance, and legal problems.

Abstract

This article discusses strategies and models for engaging diverse community partnerships through the Youth of Color Needs Assessment, a community-based participatory research project that elevates the voices and experiences of homeless and unstably housed youth of color in King County, Washington. Building upon the lens and expertise of a young Community Advocate thrust into research, it explores the strengths of youth of color leadership and best practices for trauma-informed, relational support for youth leaders and focus group participants alike. The author offers insights of a youth-centered model for the field grounded in engagement, sustainability, and ethics for research within and for communities at the margins. Abstract

This journal article describes a study that used qualitative in-depth interviews with 13 mentors in a school-based program to learn about their perceptions of the strain experienced by their mentees, and how they respond to it during sessions. The study looked at a national mentorship program implemented in two middle schools in a southeastern metropolitan area of the US. The researchers focused on emotional regulation, conflict resolution, future orientation, and active listening as positive coping strategies associated with enhanced resilience among at-risk youth. The study considers how these four positive strategies fit into the mentors’ descriptions of their approaches and the implications for intervention programming. (author abstract modified)

Abstract

This report outlines a public-private partnership between the Casey Family Programs, New York City’s Administration for Children’s Services (ACS), the City University of New York (CUNY), and Goldman Sachs to develop and implement the Fostering College Success Initiative (FCSI) mentoring program. This program is available to CUNY students who are also in the ACS foster care system. The report summarizes the FCSI program’s core elements and discusses sustainability and replicability to other jurisdictions. It also offers lessons learned about the public-private partnership model and the next steps for the program.
