Student Homelessness: Lessons from the Youth Risk Behavior Survey
Abstract:

This research brief from SchoolHouse Connection looks at demographic and risk factor data of high school students experiencing homelessness compared with students not experiencing homelessness. It uses the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) results from 17 states during the 2016-2017 school year. These data indicate students who identify as lesbian, gay, or questioning (LGBQ) are nearly three times more likely to experience homelessness compared with heterosexual students. Other research has found LGBTQ youth encounter more bullying in school and are more likely to be victims of both physical and sexual violence. Based on these findings, SchoolHouse Connection urges schools to adopt a district-wide approach to focus on equity and safety for all students. This brief provides action steps and additional resources for schools. (author abstract modified)
