Abstract:

In this one-page Fact Sheet, the authors provide information on teen pregnancy for physicians working with children and adolescents. They begin by presenting statistics on teen pregnancy in the United States and the societal costs incurred as a result. The authors then identify important implications for the health and development of the children of teen parents. These negative outcomes fall in the areas of health, education, abuse and neglect, criminal justice and becoming teen parents themselves. The authors also examine the link between teen childbearing and poverty. The Fact Sheet includes contact information for further reference and assistance for physicians.
