Abstract:

This 137-page Leader's Guide is for facilitators of We Can! Energize our Families, a program from the National Institutes of Health. We Can! Stands for Ways to Enhance Children's Activity and Nutrition. It is a national education program to help children ages 8 to 13 stay at a healthy weight by improving food choices, increasing physical activity, and reducing screen time. The Parent Program consists of four 90-minute sessions. Session 1 provides an overview of the program and whey overweight is an important health issue for many Americans today. Session 2 introduces the concept of energy balance (ENERGY IN = ENERGY OUT) and explores two important issues that have an impact on this equation: portion size and time spent in physical activity every day. Session 3 provides examples of ENERGY IN realities of everyday life by showing how participants can cut back on fat and added sugar. Session 4 suggests strategies for improving ENERGY OUT by increasing physical activity and reducing screen time. Theguide includes general guidelines for carrying out the program as well as detailed instructions for each session, pre- and post-session evaluation instruments, and participant handouts.
