This 61-page family guide is part of We Can! Energize our Families, a program from the National Institutes of Health. We Can! Stands for Ways to Enhance Children's Activity and Nutrition. It is a national education program to help children ages 8 to 13 stay at a healthy weight by improving food choices, increasing physical activity, and reducing screen time. The Parent Program consists of four sessions. Session 1 provides an overview of the program and whey overweight is an important health issue for many Americans today. Session 2 introduces the concept of energy balance (ENERGY IN = ENERGY OUT) and explores two important issues that have an impact on this equation: portion size and time spent in physical activity every day. Session 3 provides examples of ENERGY IN realities of everyday life by showing how participants can cut back on fat and added sugar. Session 4 suggests strategies for improving ENERGY OUT by increasing physical activity and reducing screen time. The guide includes allthe handouts for the program and a list of helpful resources.
