Abstract:

The McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act ensures educational rights and protections for children and youth experiencing homelessness. Although the Act allows students in homeless situations to remain in their schools of origin despite their residential instability, lack of transportation often prevents them from continuing in the school of origin. Therefore, Local Education Agencies (LEAs) are now required to provide transportation to the school of origin. This 2-page brief explains the key transportation provisions of the legislation and suggests strategies for implementing them in a school district.
