Abstract: 

This publication presents guidelines for managing a therapeutic community, a residential rehabilitation program for substance abusers. The guide presents the philosophies and a program description of the therapeutic community approach to substance abuse treatment. The phases of treatment for the offender (orientation, main treatment, and re- entry) are described, and encounter (therapy) groups and therapeutic community slang definitions are defined. The orientation manual for the Gateway Foundation Substance Abuse Treatment Center are and a description of the New Vision Chemical Dependency Treatment Programs are included as examples.
