Abstract:

Describes street children in Asian countries, and presents information on: 1) statistics and demographics; 2) Asian countries' socio-economic and cultural characteristics; 3) etiology of the problem; 4) descriptions of life on the streets; and 5) programs to support street children. Some estimates place the number of street children in Asia between 25 and 30 million, and blames rapid urbanization, environmental degradation, inequitable distribution of wealth, and the break down of family and community values and structures for the growing number of children living on the streets in Asian countries.
