Abstract:

Effective Learning, Effective Teaching, Effective Service: Voices from the Field on Improving Education Through Service-Learning is a collection of 26 essays which present a variety of perspectives on service-learning. The articles were written by national service advocates, including former Senator Harris Wofford, Maryland Lieutenant Governor Kathleen Kennedy Townsend, and Toni Schmeiglow, Executive Director of The City Volunteer Corps in New York City. The theme of this collection was limited to service-learning as a tool for education reform and was based on the Alliance for Service Learning in Education Reform (ASLER) definition of service-learning. The articles focus on service-learning and its integration into the school curriculum. Specific topics include service-learning and character education, service as a way to train teachers, and service-learning and youth in at-risk circumstances.
